It is actually the product of a simple cellular automation. Think of it as a series of single line entities, and each line is generated from the line before it. Each pixel on the new line being generated from the three above it by a set of rules. There are 8 posibilities for the three binary traits, and a rule for each posibility as to whether the new pixel should be on or off.

I hope that was enlightening to you, I can explain it in more depth if you are really curious.
